Let’s talk about fan fiction (fantic)

Have you heard of it? Maybe you’ve written some yourself? I happen to think it’s a very underrated form of writing. To write in someone else’s style takes a lot of skill and talent. Of course, there is some shockingly bad fanfiction out there, but there are some absolute gems too.

People put whole books up online, usually, a chapter at a time for you to enjoy, and some of the most wonderful quotes come from fanfiction (don’t believe me? Look it up, you won’t be disappointed!). These people are brave, amazing and talented. And a little bit weird.

There is something for everyone too, there will be a fandom (community of excellent fans) for everything you can think of, from real people to fictional characters and everything in between. You can have stories that are rated U and fine for all, all the way up to x-rated kinky stuff, smut. They almost always come with warnings, so if you are looking for heterosexual romantic stuff you won’t suddenly start to read dude on dude porn. There is a LOT of smut out there peeps, be warned, or excited, I’m not here to judge!

The words fascinate me too, Wanna learn some of them?

‘Shippers’ people who really REALLY want two people to get together.

‘Canon’ which means the original work by the creators, the official universe.

‘Non-canon’ is where writers have used their characters and world to create their own fanfiction. They must state that they do not own any of the characters or the world, this is a copyright thing.

‘Cross-overs’ are where you cross two forms of fiction, so you may have Dean from Supernatural in a relationship with Phoebe from Charmed.

‘AU’ or ‘Alternate Universe’ in which the story is set somewhere else, or in a different time, or reality. These can be lots of fun, seeing how the characters react to different circumstances.

‘Fanzine’ is a bunch of fanfictions put together to make a magazine for fans.

There is a rumour, a very exciting rumour surrounding fanfiction, it is said that writers/producers/generally important people sneak on and read fanfic incognito as a way to see what the fans want from the show they create (I hope you did a dramatic, ooooohhhh at that?!). I can neither confirm or deny this rumour, mainly because I’m not any of the above people.

I love it! I love it all! I didn’t know about such things as fanfiction existed until this year, and now I read it all the time. I have yet to write anything myself but I have the utmost respect for those who do write it. As a reader I will ask other readers to do one thing, let the writer know you have read it, comment, like it, do whatever is acceptable in your fandom but please let them know that their hard work is appreciated. Be kind. Don’t write ‘this is crap’ if you didn’t enjoy something, be constructive, these people are proud of their work and it takes balls to put it out there for all to read. Be nice. Lend a hand, help them with grammar or sentence structure.

Here are some good sites for reading fanfic, please be aware of the age bands, they are there for a reason!

One more thing before I go, some of them are shockingly bad, I mean, really really bad, but please remember that you started somewhere too, let’s help these people, help them to improve. And also some of them are written by young teens, please be aware of that too.

Want me to read your fanfic? Sure! Send it my way!

See you soon!

Word of The Week (13)

Phew! It’s been a crazy one guys! I’m at a Girlguiding leader camp, it’s cool. I like a bit of learning. Plus, these ladies make awesome characters, combining their traits and quirks to make a new person is fun! Shhhh, don’t tell them I said that!

Anyway onto the new word before I’m, lynched!!

This is a great word! Its nice to say and it sounds cool. It’s when you entice or deceive someone by sweet talk or flattery. I think its a more sophisticated way of saying lip service. Sales people use this technique a lot, you cant help but respond to it. Being honeyfuggled is not something to be ashamed of, its part of human behaviour, I’ve fallen for it loads.

Here’s a story for you, my Mum and I went Christmas shopping a couple of years ago, its something of a tradition, we go every year. We were in a well known department store and there was a demonstration going on, the guy was captivating and engaging. He was prancing around the little area he had his stall in and he was a honeyfuggle expert. He must have said something nice to every member of the audience. Anyway, long story short, both me and my Mum spend a stupid amount of money on 2 hand whisks. That we didn’t need. That I will struggle to use. Because he made it sound like we needed them. And he liked my Mum’s teeth. The guy was brilliant!

So there you go, we all get honeyfuggled on occasion!

See you soon…..

Word of the week (8)

Not late. Go me! Haha!

This word is something that describes at least one person you know. Everyone knows someone like this!

Crapehanger, someone who always sees the gloomy side of life. Think Eeyore, he was a total crapehanger, but everyone still loved him! It’s another way of saying someone is a pessimist.

So there you go, another word to add to your vocabulary!

See you soon gang!

Self doubt ‘v’ I’m a genius moments

We all have self doubt, that’s a given, no one is so super confident that they think they are great all the time. But a lot of people talk about self doubt and how to get over it and in my opinion the truth of the matter is that you can’t. There, I said it. Controversial I know. But hear me out.

Self doubt is what keep’s you going, sounds backwards right? No! It’s really not! Because you strive for perfection and you feel that you are not good enough which means you will continue to write, your writing will improve and you will get better. So embrace your self doubt, it’s what helps to spur you on.

Genius moments on the other hand. Can be a total double edge sword. On the one hand you may have actually written something that is clearly a work of genius that needs to be recognised by the whole world over and will probably secure your name in history along with Shakespeare and Stephen King. You feel that swell of pride and give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done. And on very few occasions, it really is that good, however if you leave it for a couple of days and then re-read it you will often wonder how you thought that was acceptable. Did a deranged ferret break in during the night and mess with your work? Is this some kind of cruel joke?

The answer my friends is no, you were just high on the little piece of magic I like to call ‘finishing a piece of work!’ But you enjoy that feeling, revel in it, bathe in it and make it your own. But remember, after the ferrets have broken in and you come to reread it, please remember that self doubt can be your friend too.

Obviously you are all geniuses who don’t need to rewrite your work, I know this cos you hang out here with me! 😉

See you soon…….
